Does anyone know of any traditional kung fu school in China that accepts foreigners? Or has some contact info?
I am wanting to travel to China within the next couple of years to seriously study kung fu. I need to know of some kung fu schools, or masters that i can get in touch with. I am willing to devote a lot of time to training. I am looking for a traditional kung fu school. I prefer southern style kung fu, but northern is okay too. i am looking for a traditional kung fu school in which the student has a lot of time to train with the sifu. I need a school that accepts foreigners. tuition or a school that has no tuition is okay. I will be able to speak chinese fluently soon, so i will not need an interpreter. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.
All you really need to do is apply for an extended stay visa with the Chinese embassy, get some passports ready, travel to China and the moment you land ask "where's the Shaolin temple?" That whole foreigner stuff is gone now in Kung Fu circles; the reason the older generation experts (experts, not masters, please don't throw around that word so lightly) refused to teach foreigners is because you probably well know, most white people are extremely malicious and cruel, and were I an expert myself, looking at things from their point of view, I would not train any of them and I can understand why many Chinese would get angry if any expert of Kung Fu trained foreigners. More in the U.S. though, where anti-east Asian racism is felt, is there still resentment and some Kung Fu schools in China towns across the country will not teach anyone who is, ah, "foreigner" or rather, non-Chinese. There is a Shaolin monk in New York who ran into some problems with the residents of NYC's China town for teaching white people; again, it doesn't seem like it from how well they live, but if you ask east asian americans to be honest as to how they feel they get treated, the majority of them will complain of racism, on all levels. Naturally for a Shaolin monk, a defacto symbol of Chinese martial arts, to train white people, is just too much for some Chinese to take, specially Chinese americans who have endured a lifetime of racist treatment.
Now in China itself, obviously because they are the majority and the PRC's army has ensured there won't be European colonialism again, because they are in their home turf basically, and more confident of their country's power, the general attitude in China itself regarding the teaching of foreigners is very different from that of Chinese Americans, the irony being, you will actually encounter more anti non-chinese feeling here in the U.S., than in China itself, when it comes to Martial arts schools. Hey man, I've been there; I met many physically fit, well toned, good posture Chinese Americans who, from the way their muscles were toned, it was obvious they practiced martial arts but they weren't always level with me, or 100% honest. Mainlander Chinese on the other hand, just spilled their guts regarding Kung Fu history, mythology, and rumors, from the acquaintances I had while attending Summer school at WSU. Its too bad they didn't stay longer; I really enjoyed picking their brain.
No man, in China, don't worry about it, any style you want to learn, so long as you are willing to really work for it, you can make it yours. The reason you do not see very many foreigners training in China, is because most can't handle it. You need to understand that China has a GDP of 7 trillion, however, its population is 1.3 billion. Contrast that to Japan, which I think has a GDP of between 9 to 11 trillion, with a population of 127 million, and contrast that with the U.S. of A which has a GDP of 14 trillion, but with a population of 300 million people case in point, its not just how much money a country makes, but its population, you really have to look at population and distribution, to determine the living standard. Take for instance Switzerland; compared to the U.S. economy, its a peanut. However, its a huge peanut far as the Swiss are concerned and there is more than enough to go around. The reason Switzerland has a thriving watch industry, is because the poor bastards don't know what to do with their time they have so much money.
What I am trying to say is, between the near squalor, VERY rudimentary living conditions, and the near inhuman training, changing from a by-comparison luxurious lifestyle, to a lifestyle deprived of luxuries most westerners take for granted, makes it so that the majority of foreigners who train at the Shaolin temple end up washing out. Say hello to ice cold showers, drafty rooms with inadequate heat, and hardship such as you can not even begin to imagine, however you want the best training China has to offer, you best train yourself psychologically to live in relative poverty.
You sound really gun ho though, so I'm sure you'll make it. Decide to live at the Shaolin temple though, while not really that expensive and this actually surprises a lot of non-Chinese people who go train there, do not expect 5 star Sheraton accomodations.

Do not expect to contact Shi Yang Ming himself, as having had advanced students open temples throughout the world, he travels a lot and is very busy. Between the mandatory 4 hours of daily training a day, 3 hours MINIMUM of lotus position Buddhist meditation, that is 7 hours right there shaved off his day, this does not even include the 4 or so hours he spends training his students.
