Know Your Senior Housing Options
As our parents age, many of us will come face to face with a difficult decision: How will I provide care for my aging loved ones? Will I be able to take them in or will they require senior home care? Even more pressing, how will I balance care for my aging parents with a full-time job and caring for my own family? While senior care for your aging parent isn't exactly a subject you want to think about, it is crucial that you prepare before it is too late.
When a parent is no longer able to carry out simple daily tasks, such as bathing, dressing and cooking for themselves, adult children must begin exploring alternative options to help care for their aging loved one. Moving your senior parent into your own home is an option. This however is not the most ideal option as most adults work 40+ hour work weeks and would have to leave their senior parent at home by themselves during the day. In addition, most seniors want to maintain their independence and remain in their own homes. For may seniors, remaining in their homes and receiving part-time care assistance is feasible, for others who require a greater extent of care and supervision, this may be unrealistic. As you begin looking at senior care options, always keep your senior loved one's particular needs in mind to make sure you choose the best options to keep them safe and healthy.
Assisted Living
Assisted Living is a long-term care option that allows your senior loved one to maintain a sense of independence while still receiving personal care. An Assisted Living community combines housing, support services and health care to assist their aging tenants. Assisted Living residents have as much freedom as they like while still having access to support services whenever they need. However, Assisted Living may not be suitable to all seniors, particularly those with more serious medical conditions that require constant supervision such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease.
Nursing Homes or Skilled Nursing Facilities
Nursing Homes, also referred to as Skilled Nursing Facilites, offer services from registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses or certified nursing aides who are available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week to administer medication and treatments to senior with medical conditions. These communities provide all the same personal care services of an Assisted Living Facility with the addition of 24-hour nursing care. Residents typically live in private or shared accommodations and sometimes share bathrooms with other patients or adjoining rooms. Nursing home care is on average the most expensive type due to the amount of personnel and medical equipment required to maintain patient care.
Home Care
With Home Care, seniors are able to remain in their own homes and receive non-medical support from a personal caregiver who comes to the senior's home. Home care services provided by these non-licensed personnel include tasks of daily living such as cooking, cleaning, laundry and driving to and from appointments. Home care services of this nature are not covered by medicare.
Home Health Care
Home Health Care refers to medical related services that are provided by licensed health care professionals such as rehabilitation therapists and nurses administered to the patient in their own home. The senior's residence could be their own home or an Assisted Living residence.
These are a few of the major senior care options you will need to do some research on as you begin the search for elder care assistance for your aging parent. When it comes to senior care options, there really is no one size fits all decision, the most suitable option will all depend on your loved one's specific medical and daily needs. Choosing a senior care option for your aging loved one is never an easy task, which is why there are a number of resources in your community to help you through the entire process from start to finish. Services like Assist Locators in Austin, Texas work directly with you to help you transition your aging parents into a safer environment and advise you on the right choices, best prices and most competent providers.
