English law on this point is relatively simple:
It is illegal to possess an article which is either:
a) made
b) modified
c) intended
for the purpose of causing harm to others, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse. "self defence" is neither.
All of the above items would be very likely to fall within that definition because they are all clearly meant to be used as weapons.
