What is the difference between Japanese (classical) Jiu-Jitsu (jujutsu) and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
and which one better
BJJ was developed and designed to compete against a single fighter in a staged contest and to beat them. Over the years it has developed with more real world practical self defense skills but in all reality it is still highly focused around competition.
Classical Jujitsu uses a full range of techniques (you could say a mix of Judo and Karate which would give a decent picture). The purpose in classical Jujitsu with taking an opponent to ground was not to mearly beat them but to incapacitate them or kill them. There was very little need to study ground grappling because they would execute the throw to crush the attacker and then either break their neck, choke them to death or dislocate an appendage.
Both systems have evolved and it is hard to say since more and more classical ryu are being dumped for cage fighting techniques which in reality does not prove an art effective except for sport and even then that is a fine line.
