How to get your art in a gallery
If you want to make a living as an artist, there are many ways you can continue to get your art in the hands of collectors.
The traditional approach, before the prevalence of the Internet was for budding artists to send slides to galleries. After sending dozens of sheets of slide to various galleries, artists had to wait weeks and often months for a gallery to answer - if they even respond at all.
Artists these days can save time and money using the power of the Internet. Even if your goal is to ensure a relationship with a brick and mortar gallery, you can still do most if not all, of the "ground work" online. Here is how:
1. Start local. For an emerging artist, it is always better to search for galleries in your area. This will can develop a personal relationship with the gallery owner and staff. Visit the gallery allows you to get a firsthand feel for the owner of the gallery and the gallery itself, before signing any contracts. Another advantage of working with a local gallery is that you will save time and money it would take to either get to and from the gallery, or packaging and safe shipment your artwork.
2. Do your research. Before contacting a gallery, you can determine whether your art is right person for their needs by conducting a thorough review of their website . Ask yourself these questions following:
- What kind of art do they show?
- What is the current size, style and material of the work they sell?
- What is the price range of the works they are selling?
- Do they represent emerging artists or established artists only?
When you ask yourself these questions, you can narrow down the pool galleries potential. For example, if you're an abstract painter and a gallery Web site shows only realistic still life, then chances are they will not interested in your work. You can remove from the list, saving you the effort to contact them.
3. Submit your art. When you find a gallery that seems a good match for your art, check their website for a policy of submission. Many galleries will have a page dedicated to "the artist observations. " On this page will tell you whether or not they accept new submissions. If they are, they describe how they want you to contact them. Some will simply ask you to send them a link to your site, while others will prefer a traditional package in the mail with your slides, resume, bio and press clippings. Always follow the procedures outlined on the site.
If you have a limited budget, then submit your art in galleries that do a link to your website. You can bookmark the galleries that require slides and when you have money, you can contact them later.
4. Keep painting! Do not sit idly by and wait for the gallery to contact you. Many of them are flooded Artist proposals, so it can take some time to contact you if they like your work. Keep painting, and in the meantime, consider exploring other options for making your art career into your own hands, we will address in future posts.
